Friday Night Forgotten Oldie: They just kept going

This is the week of amour. Tonight’s oldie was one of my Dad’s favorites.

At the 1977 American Music Awards, presented on January 31, 1977, Lou Rawls was nominated in the Soul/R & B Single category.

Frank Sinatra once described Rawls as having “the classiest singing and silkiest chops in the singing game.”

During the awards program Rawls sang what would be his most successful hit. The performance that night was anything but typical.

Were you watching on TV?

Do you remember?

Glen Campbell does the introduction.

The back-up singers and orchestra never quit. Neither did Rawls.

That same night…

“You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine” was a No. 1 R&B hit that also rose to No. 2 on the pop charts.

Rawls died of lung cancer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles in January 2006. He was 72.
