Goodnight everyone, and have a fool-ish weekend!

Every Friday night we smooth our way into the weekend with music, the universal language. These selections demonstrate that despite what is being passed off as art today, there is plenty of really good music available. Come along and enjoy.

Saturday is April 1. You know what that means.

How did the tradition begin? From history.com:

Although the day, also called All Fools’ Day, has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures, its exact origins remain a mystery. Some historians speculate that April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes. These included having paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as “poisson d’avril” (April fish), said to symbolize a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person.

This week’s theme? Don’t be a fool. That’s right. You guessed it!

Now don’t laugh. It’s all good.

Let’s get started with the King.

Opening with Elvis is never a bad way to get the ball rolling.

So here he is with…”Fool!”

No.

Great song.

Sad song.

It’s one of several a despondent Elvis recorded after his divorce from Priscilla.

If we ever do a theme on love gone wrong this one’s definitely in.

We move on.

Of course. How could we foolishly forget.

Here’s Elvis with one of his many, many, many gold records, “Now and then, there’s a Fool Such as I.”

Wait.

Wait.

Wait a minute!

No.

No? That was a million times and more seller. What are you talking about, no?

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

Great song. Just not our opener.

So what’s left?

Hmm.

This song dates back to 1940, recorded by Glenn Miller, and also Tommy Dorsey with Frank Sinatra.

Ricky Nelson enjoyed the biggest hit with this tune, reaching #12 on the Billboard chart in 1963. Nelson sped up the song with an early rock and roll style. Elvis emulated the Ricky Nelson approach when he recorded his version in 1971 for an album released in 1972.

The album “Elvis NOW” not surprisingly went gold.

This next song topped at #5 in 1956 for Frankie Lymon and the Teengers, an all-teen group, and made Frankie Lymon, 13 at the time,  a star of the early rock and roll era.
Lymon went solo the following year. His career quickly fell apart. So it did for others in the group as well.

Lymon died in 1968 of  a heroin overdose.

In 1964 the Beach Boys had a  monster hit with “Fun Fun Fun.” It, of course, had to have a “B” side that was later released with a new intro.

Are you playing along?

Is he going to do this?

Is he going to do it next?

An absolute must for this theme.

Any guesses?

Our next performer was one off the greatest entertainers of our time period. From his obituary in the NY Times:

The showman was born in a Harlem tenement, grew up in vaudeville from the age of 3 and never went to school. His talents as a mime, comedian, trumpet player, drummer, pianist and vibraphonist as well as singer and dancer were shaped from his childhood and made him one of the nation’s first black performers to gain mainstream acclaim.

With heavy jewelry around his neck and on his fingers, and clad in a snug jumpsuit or tuxedo, the short, slim showman with a broken nose, defiant jaw and big, crooked smile had a rakish charm that energized stages for decades. He sold out leading nightclubs and concert halls.

The triumphs were punctuated by sometimes ugly controversies – abuse and slurs by whites, particularly over his marriage to a white actress, May Britt; resentment by blacks over what they viewed as his white life style, and widespread skepticism over his mid-1950’s conversion to Judaism.

Mr. Davis also endured major health setbacks. He lost his left eye in a near-fatal 1954 auto crash, had reconstructive hip surgery in 1985 that enabled him to dance again, and was told last year that he had throat cancer. He underwent eight weeks of radiation treatments for a carcinoma growing behind his vocal cords, until his doctors said the cancer was in remission. He had smoked heavily for many years.

The debilitating illness and treatment prompted 26 of his fellow entertainers to salute his courage and longtime efforts to lower racial barriers in a two-and-a-half-hour television tribute on Feb. 4. The frail but indomitable Mr. Davis, whose voice was only a husky whisper, did not speak, but he rose to do a brief soft-shoe step to a standing ovation.

Only a year earlier, he had announced his defeat of alcohol and cocaine.

That’s it for this week.

Sleep well.

Have a great weekend.

Friday Night Forgotten Oldie: Missed opportunity?

https://i0.wp.com/www.thecoast.net.nz/media/8204339/clem-curtis.jpg

Recognize him?  He’s Clem Curtis who died this week at the age of 76.

Curtis was the original lead singer of The Foundations, a group out of the United Kingdom.

Born in Trinidad, Curtis joined The Foundations in 1967 and sang on a handful of records. But in 1968, frustrated at what he thought was a lack of effort by the band, he left.

Replacing him was new vocalist Colin Young. With Young now doing the singing The Foundations would go on to have their biggest international hit with the pop-soul classic “Build Me Up Buttercup,” a No. 3 hit on the Hot 100 in 1969, not exactly a forgotten oldie.

Curtis did the honors on the group’s breakout hit “Baby Now That I’ve Found You,” which topped the singles charts in the U.K. and reached No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Please join me in sending a message to Franklin alderwoman Kristen Wilhelm

Please, if you live in Kristen Wilhelm’s district and are as frustrated as I am at her complete lack of responsible leadership, pledge to leave her space on the ballot (she’s unopposed) blank.

She’s been my alderwoman for a ton of years. I rarely call on her for help or to suggest taking a stance on an issue. Whenever I do the answer from the uber-liberal Wilhelm to this conservative is forget you, take a hike.

I’m handed a huge helping of liberal condescension. I’m not the only person she represents. I’m not the only person’s views she needs to consider, I’ve been told. What the hell? No one else in Franklin shares the same view as me or my wife? Is she serious?

And here’s the topper why I can’t stand her in office. Kristen, you say you can’t understand why I feel the way I do. Hope I’m not writing or talking too fast for you.

Not only don’t you listen, not only don’t you care, but you arrogantly, yes arrogantly submit that we couldn’t possibly be as knowledgeable or smart as you are because you go to all the meetings and have access to all kinds of information the public doesn’t.  In other words, I or any other constituent couldn’t possibly be as intelligent as her.

Pardon me, Kristen, if I refuse to bow and kiss your ring.

Kristen got so upset that I blogged about her major shortcomings as my representative on the Common Council that she picked up her far-too-expensive cell phone and actually called the mayor, crying, demanding that he instruct me to stop.

Let’s keep this brief with a one-word assessment: Pathetic.

Just a few reasons in this blog (there might be more, stay tuned) why you need to:

LEAVE THE SPACE ON THE BALLOT FOR ALDERWOMAN WILHELM TUESDAYBLANK.

Lots of information here about Kristen’s contribution to the dysfunction on the Common Council. Some links might be broken.

And this is a beauty.

Look, we know Wilhelm is a shoo-in for re-election. She has her fans, and has fooled a lot of folks. But my vote is precious. No way I vote for her. No way. Please join me in keeping her spot on the ballot BLANK.

Lot to read here. Hope you’ll examine all, and thank you.

Today’s highly interesting read (03/30/17): Americans are now utterly intolerant of ever being told they’re wrong about almost anything

Incivility reigns all across America.

Tom Nichols is the author of the recently published “The Death of Expertise” and a professor at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. In the book he writes:

“These are dangerous times. Never have so many people had access to so much knowledge, and yet been so resistant to learning anything.”

And he has a new column out.

We need to start listening to each other with a greater assumption of good will. Cable news has become a gladiatorial exercise, but that doesn’t mean each of us must approach conversation as a fight to the finish.

We must come out from behind our keyboards and smartphones and televisions and engage each other as citizens, rather than opponents. In an age of binary, win-at-all-costs politics, this is a tall order. But citizens need to be better examples to our political and media leaders than they’ve been to us.

Moving Milwaukee County Forward

Let’s suppose I was running for mayor against Franklin’s Steve Olson…

There certainly are items I could use against him. Contrary to what some believe we don’t always sing out of the same hymnal.

However one issue I wouldn’t try to use in my campaign would be sex offenders in Franklin.

In the latest flyer I received from mayoral candidate Basil Ryan he claims “Franklin has more sexual predators than any surrounding community.”

Ryan does not cite any data or source to verify his assertion.

I’m curious as to where he got his information.

IF, I repeat, IF he is counting inmates at the House of Correction that are not from Franklin, then his claim is disingenuous.

Let’s not forget that when Olson was an alderman he was one of the key architects of Franklin’s restrictive sex offender ordinances. Dozens of other communities followed suit, using Franklin as the model. Others that hadn’t taken action yet looked to Olson for advice.

I saw Olson appear before other elected counterparts. He’d systematically provide information about what Franklin did, why and how. Though supportive of the concept of restrictive ordinances, Olson stopped short of instructing what he believed each municipality should specifically do, urging other local officials to consider, instead, what is best for their communities.

In September of 2015 Olson wrote a letter to members of a state Assembly committee that was considering sex offender legislation. Olson’s letter read in part:

The City of Franklin has been at the forefront of protecting its’ youngest citizens from sex offenders. We were the first city in the state to enact thoughtful and fair residency restrictions on convicted sex offenders in 2007. Our ordinance has been used by a large number of communities throughout the state as the model for their own ordinances.

Franklin crafted our ordinance to protect our children from the threat of sex offenders. We held four public hearings and debated at length the protection zones as well as the distances we felt we needed to protect our children given our community make up and geography. We did our research and we balanced our efforts to protect our children with the rights of sex offenders. We felt it important to be responsible and have areas available to accommodate sex offenders

We were also the first community to prosecute (and defend) our ordinance. Our ordinance and several others across the state have been held to be enforceable and constitutional.

Finally, here’s  a memo written late last year by Franklin Police Chief Oliva. We’ve deleted names of the offenders. Take note of Oliva’s final thoughts, and then vote for Steve Olson for mayor on Tuesday, April 4.
