President Trump: “I” vs. “We”

Earlier this morning I caught some of National Public Radio’s live coverage of the Inauguration of Donald Trump. They were predictably disappointing.

Mara Liasson, the national political correspondent for NPR was asked by a colleague what we could expect to hear from Donald Trump’s inaugural speech.  Liasson answered in part that she would be interested in how many times Trump would refer to “I” and “We.” She implied that what we’d hear would be revealing as to what extent Trump would be willing to compromise and work well with others. I’m guessing Liasson was expecting an address dominated by ego. If so she was badly mistaken.

Keep in mind Barack Obama frequently mentioned himself during his eight years of speeches. During his recent farewell speech in Chicago the former narcissistic president used the word “I” 47 times and also used the pronoun “me” another 12 times.

At today’s Inauguration President Trump mentioned himself just three times in two sentences. He referred to “we” the American people 45 times.
