Friday Night Forgotten Oldie: “It’s been rumored that I died”

The Grateful Dead set the record for the largest ticketed concert in U.S. history.

New Jersey 1977. 107,019 fans came to see the band at Raceway Park.

That record is no more.

Country superstar George Strait set the new record when nearly 110,905 fans packed into Kyle Field at Texas A&M last Saturday to see the 72-year-old country star play.

Strait is used to big crowds. Nearly 109,000 fans filled AT&T Stadium in Arlington when the Poteet, Texas native wrapped up what was billed as his final tour in the Lone Star State in 2014.

From the finale at the 2014 concert, a star-studded cast join Strait and his band:

Vince Gill, Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Sheryl Crow, Martina McBride, Faith Hill, Alan Jackson, Miranda Lambert, Kenny Chesney, and Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel.

The LA Times called Strait “the genre’s most consistent A-list act.”

On Saturday, June 3, 2023, Strait performed before a crowd of 46,641 at Milwaukee’s American Family Field. That was better than Paul McCartney’s 2013 American Family Field record by more than 2,000 fans.

According to Billboard, Strait has recorded more number one singles than any artist in any genre. He’s had 60 hits top the country music charts.

His latest album, “Cowboys and Dreamers,” goes on sale in September.
