Why are there mass shootings, in schools or elsewhere?
With some perfunctory research on my part that did not include the rantings of knee-jerk Leftists who without justification accuse Republicans who believe in the 2nd Amendment of having blood on their hands I found the following:
The killer is asocial
He comes from a seriously dysfunctional family
He has mental issues
He is fascinated by violence
Red flags were ignored by almost everyone
These young people have been desensitized to violence and carnage through the proliferation of ever more graphic movies, media sensationalism of horrific crime, unbridled internet access, and yes, video games
The two-parent nuclear family and the support it provides is becoming all too rare
Religious institutions constantly are under attack
Crime or personal disputes are motivated by drug activity, gang conflict, domestic violence and personal disputes
Nearly all mass shooters had been exposed to violence and experienced childhood trauma such as abuse, neglect, interpersonal violence, bullying, and parental suicide
Columbia University researchers in 2021 found that mass shooters in the United States were more likely to use recreational drugs
Note the final bolded point.
That leads to today’s read from Ronald Kessler, a former Washington Post and Wall Street Journal investigative reporter. Here’s an excerpt:
President Biden and Democrats favor stricter gun controls when virtually none of the Democrats’ proposals would have stopped any of the mass shooters who have plagued this country in recent years.
Instead, virtually everyone ignores the obvious reason for the dramatic increase in these tragedies: Democrats push legalizing marijuana. But marijuana use has been linked to more and more mass shooters.
