Mask madness could return

Did you see that screaming headline from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on May 20?

Masks advised in Milwaukee due to ‘high’ level of COVID-19 community spread

Cue the fear-mongering.

The Milwaukee Health Department on Friday recommended that residents return to masking as the county moved into the “high” level of COVID-19 community spread, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The mask advisory applies when inside in public settings — regardless of vaccination status or past COVID-19 infection, the department said in a statement.

It applies to anyone older than 2 years old who is not prevented from wearing a mask for medical reasons.

One gets the sense that control freaks are just itching at the chance to impose their will on zombie Americans all over again. On Sunday Dr. Ashish Jha, the White House coronavirus coordinator appeared on ABC’s “This Week.” Here’s what he had to say:

“Look, we have a lot of infections out there. It’s still quite disruptive. And 300 people a day are still dying of this disease. That’s way too much.

“First and foremost, my advice is, if you have not gotten vaccinated in the last five months, if you have not gotten boosted, you need to go out and do that now. Now is a good time to do it. What we know is vaccines continue to provide a high level of protection against people getting seriously ill. So that’s advice number one.

“Advice number two is, when you’re in an indoor space, you should be wearing a mask. I feel that very strongly, that in crowded indoor spaces, in places with high transmission, people should be doing that.

“We also are planning for a variety of scenarios, including a wave of infection this fall and winter.”

And now, for the scary clincher from Jha:

“We’ve got to keep working on it. We’re just not done yet.”

We’re not done yet.

It’s entirely plausible that power-hungry unelected bureaucrats that once tasted uncontrolled authority (like appointed health directors) would jump at the opportunity to snatch it back.

A concern is the potential hammer on schools. A return to masks? But school is done in a few weeks, right? So what. You think the education intelligentsia wouldn’t strike again? And after the school year ends then comes summer school. Hot sticky sweaty summer school. The perfect time to inflict more pain and suffering on the kiddos.

What’s promising is that this isn’t March of 2020. Parents have fought battles with tyrannical school officials. They’re not going to take it anymore. Same goes for the general public. These days they’re far from willing to fold and comply.

But it’s clear the CovidAholics are up to something.

“We also are planning for a variety of scenarios, including a wave of infection this fall and winter.”

I’ll bet.
