What the anti-Strauss movement may have cost Franklin

Last week the Franklin Planning Commission voted 4-1 to approve a special use permit for Strauss Meats to expand on a site on the far west side of the city. The vote came despite a message read at the meeting that Strauss wants to sell the land. The Franklin Common Council meets next week to take up the Commission’s recommendation.

Many short-sighted residents seem to be celebrating. They possess zero comprehension that the city’s business climate has just taken a serious hit.

Here’s the key point no one has focused on while this debate languishes in litigation: what Strauss in limbo is costing the city.

If and when completed the new Strauss facility would result in $1,210,230 annual property tax revenue.

Let that sink in. $1,210,230…every year.

The ringleader of the kill Strauss movement is running for alderman. He is the most flawed candidate in the April election and would be dangerous for Franklin’s future.  It is imperative his opponent, incumbent Alderman Mike Barber be re-elected in District 5.

  1. I’m ambivalent about the Strauss project but I do object to this editorial’s language about the citizens who oppose the Strauss issue and the “ringleader” running for alderman. My question: do you think that any of that $1,210,230 in tax revenue would have gone towards reducing property tax burden in Franklin?

  2. Your $1.2 million in lost property tax revenue from Strauss is pure BS. The 2019 assessed value of the current facility is $15 million and taxes paid to the City of Franklin were $57,722. The proposed facility is expected to be worth approximately $75 million on the high side, so $288,610 a year in missed property taxes would be on the high side.

I am not quite sure where you got your numbers from or how much you’ve had to drink.
