Today’s highly interesting read (06/17/21): The Politics of Making Juneteenth a Federal Holiday

This week US Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) dropped his objection to designating Juneteenth Day as a national holiday.

“Resolutions recognizing the significance of, and celebrating, Juneteenth have unanimously passed with my support in Congress every year I’ve been a U.S. senator. Last year, a bill was introduced to celebrate Juneteenth by providing an additional paid holiday for 2 million federal employees at a cost of $600 million per year. They attempted to pass the bill without debate or amendment process. Although I strongly support celebrating Emancipation, I objected to the cost and lack of debate.

“While it still seems strange that having taxpayers provide federal employees paid time off is now required to celebrate the end of slavery, it is clear that there is no appetite in Congress to further discuss the matter. Therefore, I do not intend to object.”

Congress moved quickly. The vote to make June 19th a national holiday was by unanimous consent in the Senate on Tuesday and it passed 415-14 on Wednesday in the House. President Biden signed the bill today.

Racial commentator and columnist Juan Williams reacted:

It took over a century after emancipation, for the civil rights movement to undo legal segregation by race. It took almost a half century after that for America to elect and reelect its first Black president.

Now a new federal holiday has come to America. The spirit of Juneteenth has always been, to my mind, to unite Americans and celebrate this remarkable historic progress.

Happy Juneteenth to all!

Today’s read is from Nate Jackson, managing editor of The Patriot Post. Here’s a brief excerpt:

It’ll be a federal holiday celebrating Republicans freeing Democrat slaves. So why are Democrats so intent on memorializing a Republican accomplishment?

The unfortunate thing about a unifying thing like this is the divisive politics. Democrats have spent the last several decades falsely insisting that the parties “switched” sides, especially on the issue of race. The entire reason for this phony narrative is that Democrats see political advantage not in debating ideas but in casting their opponents as racists.
