After a near decade of money-making but not the highest quality movies, Elvis wanted to break out and go public again. The ’68 Comeback Special, recorded in late June and broadcast on NBC-TV in December was a resounding triumph.
In addition to groundbreaking Elvis in the round performances with some old band-mates there were huge production numbers. One of them had Elvis a roaming guitar man with one of his stops at a steamy place that came off as a brothel. The “bordello” scene got by NBC’s censors, but the sponsor of the 1968 program, Singer (the sewing machine manufacturer) thought it was too sexy, and it was dropped from the program. The medley did appear on the 1968 RCA soundtrack album, and years later was added and included on other TV specials.
My favorite part hits exactly at the 11:22 mark. SCREAMS!
