Milwaukee County Supervisor Patti Logsdon wants to raise your taxes

When Patti Logsdon ran for the Milwaukee County Supervisor seat in the 9th District in April of 2018 she claimed she was the most conservative candidate in the race, even more so than the incumbent, Franklin Alderman Steve Taylor.

Logsdon had never held office and she herself remained for the most part silent, rarely speaking about why she was the better choice. And for good reason. Logsdon is nowhere near an articulate public figure.

Because of that political flaw Logsdon relied on Supervisor Deanna Alexander to serve as her mouthpiece. Taylor at the time had a reputation of being a loose cannon. Alexander released a lengthy statement to the press backing Logsdon because Taylor supposedly got angry with her prior to and during a meeting and also yelled at her.

Far more damaging was County Executive Chris Abele’s desire to get Taylor ousted to the point Abele self-funded hit/attack pieces against Taylor that inundated mailboxes daily in the 9th District. As the mud flew with Taylor unable to keep up neither Logsdon nor her mouthpiece Alexander condemned the sleazy lit pieces. Instead, they held up their hands and shook their heads. Wasn’t us.

Talk radio didn’t endorse Taylor and he lost.

Prior to the Taylor-Logsdon I was NOT an ally of Taylor’s. But I’ve observed countless races since I first got into journalism and elections in 1978 and I could not stomach what was happening here. No way was Logsdon the clean, nice, elderly candidate she was being passed off as. I also didn’t feel she was capable of grasping the responsibilities and duties of the position. People (some, not all) were stunned at my stance. To this day I know I was right. Logsdon has under-performed and then some.

The latest evidence is Logsdon’s recent newsletter. Lame is the best compliment I could offer. Let’s analyze this, or maybe Deanna Alexander wrote it, I’m not sure.

“When I took my oath of office, I promised to faithfully discharge my duties. That promise marked my commitment to the 9th District to be fiscally responsible while meeting our needs.”

Fiscally responsible. Gotcha Patti! Now for some yada, yada, yada.

“This year’s budget cycle is again exposing a fundamental flaw in Milwaukee County’s finances. Our expenses to provide basic services like infrastructure improvements and bus service continue to rise but our sources of funding are capped.”

Then she pulls a Franklin Mayor Steve Olson. Local government funding problems. It’s gotta be the state’s fault. Yeh, that’s it. The state. They’re the meanies!

Back to Logsdon and her newsletter.

“That is why I have worked with the County Executive and other members of the Board to craft the Fair Deal for Milwaukee County.”

The so-called Fair Deal is a laundry list of wants the county executive and board are lobbying for, seeking more government aid. Conservative?

Please follow along.

“The Fair Deal proposals will help mitigate our financial difficulties without having tax increases as our only tool. Please consider calling your state legislator and telling them you support the Fair Deal for Milwaukee County.”

Clearly, Logsdon supports this “Fair Deal.”

She continues in her newsletter.

“As part of the Fair Deal, County leaders are proposing a 1% sales tax increase to fund County government. The state legislature would have to approve such a move. Because I understand that County finances are tight, the state’s policies have forced us to look at different options to increase revenues to avoid cutting additional services.”

Carefully, safely worded. But to me this is a signal Logsdon not only supports a referendum going to voters but also its approval.

“When I took my oath of office, I promised to faithfully discharge my duties. That promise marked my commitment to the 9th District to be fiscally responsible while meeting our needs.”

Then Logsdonin her newsletter takes a cozy-up to voters approach after she more or less stated she supports a tax increase referendum. She has taken the Kool-Aid.

“I would welcome your opinion on this important issue.”

Here’s Logsdon’s flimsy newsletter.

She’s a conservative, right? Just ask her, or Alexander.

I did ask Logsdon to respond but she never returned a single e-mail to me during the 2018 election. Her tactic is to just hide and do what she does best: say nothing.

During that 2018 campaign Steve Taylor and I both expressed fear that Logsdon would owe allegiance, not to her constituents, but to Abele for dumping all that money in her favor. It’s turning out to be true.
