Now, here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer, with this week’s main blog.
My best friend lost her dad when he was WAY too young. We were under 30 and to say we were devastated by his sudden death to a heart attack is a gross understatement. Chuck was a second dad to me and an inspiration to all who knew him. He was so much to so many… intelligent, funny, kind, a leader in so many ways, caring, full of integrity, loving, gentle, humble, and generous to nearly a fault. I challenge anyone who knew him to find a single bad word to say about him. So many mourned his passing but none so much as his equally amazing wife, Mary, who is just as much of a second mom to me.
Chuck & Mary were blessed in many ways and that included the benefits of Chuck’s many years of dedicated hard work to his career. Yes Chuck was, as I mentioned, humble. That’s not to say he didn’t enjoy gadgets, toys, and luxuries that he was able to provide for his family. When he died, Mary was surrounded by friends & family for support but ultimately she was alone in a very large home. Every room held precious memories that comforted her. But despite mementos, photos, and memorials throughout the house there was one thing that really truly made a difference in those days.
Dusty & Mopsy (get it… Dust Mop? That’s a glimpse at Chuck’s humor) were two of the sweetest Shih Tzu’s you’d ever want to meet. Even the dogs in his family were crazy spoiled. Sunday’s meant a trip through McDonald’s drive thru for a soda for Chuck and a sausage patty for the girls. They knew by doggy intuition when their special day of the week had arrived and weren’t shy about reminding him if he wasn’t getting the keys fast enough. They were there for Mary and literally brought extra life into the house. One look at those faces and you had to cheer up if only for a moment at a time.
Eventually they both crossed the Rainbow Bridge and Mary got another Shih Tzu who she named Sophie. Then came the tough decision to sell their home. Sophie was the perfect constant throughout that difficult, memory-filled time of transitioning to an apartment. Mary has an amazing outlook and disposition along with an incredible support system. Still she would have been justified in feeling depressed. I never saw so much as a glimpse of that from her. I truly credit her pets as part of her healing process.
Indeed, furry friends ease depression, loneliness after spousal loss.
