Don’t be fooled by the updated city of Franklin tax rate

Franklin Mayor Steve Olson presented his annual budget proposal to the Common Council Tuesday night. Two key percentages were offered.

The proposed tax rate will go down 3.35%.

The proposed tax levy will go up 1.57%.

By far the most important number is the levy. The rate is meaningless. The levy is the amount of spending.  Alderman Steve Taylor said that before he votes for a 1.57% increase in spending he wants to know where that money will go.

Watch for the city to ballyhoo the drop in the rate when in reality the city is increasing spending.

I found this noteworthy. Alderman John Nelson asked if it’s true that 81% of the budget goes to staff. The answer was yes.
