The Barking Lot – America’s Finest Dog Blog (07/13/19)

The Barking Lot is a regular weekly feature of This Just In…Written by my lovely wife, Jennifer and me.  It opens with the weekend dog walking forecast followed by the main blog from dog lover, Jennifer. Then it’s DOGS IN THE NEWS and our close. Enjoy!

THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.

TODAY:  Partly cloudy. Could be sticky. A high of 86. “A”

SUNDAY:  Mostly sunny. Less humid. High of 84.  “A”

Now, here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog.

Do you consider yourself a friendly, outgoing person?  Do you find it easy to introduce yourself to strangers?  Are you the kind of person who can make small talk with people in almost any situation (even a crowded elevator?)  Do you describe yourself with a term I’ve grown to hate because of its overuse…  a “people person?”

Fine, fine, fine…  You’re socially confident.  But would you go up to a completely unknown individual and ask them something to the effect, “Hey…  I can’t finish this {insert name of half-eaten item here} would you like it?” Yet recently that is just what our daughter Kyla did.

We spent a lovely afternoon at this year’s Franklin Civic Celebration enjoying music, rides, running into neighbors, and eating tasty food.  Kyla has a pretty eclectic palate but more than anything that day she wanted a festival classic. Her smile says it all don’t you think?

Kyla Corn

Munching happily, we made our way to the music tent but not before we encountered another cutie enjoying the same treat.  Only this corn cob connoisseur had four paws and a tail. It was the first time we’d ever witnessed a dog enjoying that summer staple the same way a human does!  All the while we listened to the band, we couldn’t get that sweet face out of our heads. So when Kyla was finished with her snack her first thought was to find the dog again and offer him her leftovers.

Fortunately we found him right where we left him.  From our earlier, albeit brief, encounter we knew his owners were friendly and he was too!  Kyla enthusiastically asked his owners if she could give him her mostly-eaten corn. There was a two-second hesitation from his mom, only because of her slight concern of too much butter.  But seeing how happy this simple food made him she quickly agreed.

It’s not hard to see that sharing her corn with Cooper made Kyla even happier than her initial bite!

Kyla Cooper

Cooper made quick work of his second cob and shows that it’s truly a lip-smacking delight.

Cooper Smacking

So we didn’t exactly exchange contact information to go out for coffee or to meet at the dog park.  But we clearly wouldn’t have gone up to that nice couple if not for Cooper. Why is it so simple to approach humans when they’re accompanied by a dog?  What ups their friendliness factor that wipes out most if not all hesitation to talk to complete strangers if they’re holding a leash?

This article just might have the answers.
