Whats the Drag Queen Story Hour? According to their national website:
“Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) is just what it sounds like—drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores (DQSH) is just what it sounds like—drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores.”
The NY Times just did a piece on the nonprofit organization that has 35 chapters in the United States and five overseas. The concept has become quite popular, but the eTimes also reports with that notoriety comes a backlash.
“Organizers have been met with sometimes aggressive protests, harassment and death threats.”
Today’s read is from Christine Flowers.
No child should be forced to confront radical ideas and controversial social movements before they are able to use the potty by themselves. We are talking about children who are settling in at the library to hear about Peppa Pig and Horton hearing a Who. This is a time when the little ones should be held in their mothers’ laps, sipping chocolate milk or juice from their sippy cups as they become mesmerized by the magic of carefully chosen words.
Harmless? Or radical?
