Friday Night Forgotten Oldie: All you do is change one word…POOF…big hit!

I’m assuming you’ve heard of Herb Alpert.

There are a few musical Energizer bunnies in the music industry today. One is Tony Bennett. Another is Herb Alpert.

Alpert was and still is, predominantly an instrumentalist.

In 1968, Alpert released a single, ‘This Guy’s in Love with You,” that had him singing the lead vocals. The song was originally intended for a TV series. However, sensing the popularity it had garnered, Alpert decided to release it as a single. The song reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart.

Throughout this year on my Friday Night Forgotten Oldies blog series I will be featuring music from the 50th anniversary of 1969, in my view, an incredible year for popular music in America.

On this date, March 1 in 1969, a recording by Dionne Warwick was at #11 on the Billboard chart and peaked at #7 the following week.
