Commentators on the left and right in America share a fascination with gloominess. Both sides have argued our communities are crumbling amidst economic despair, the American dream is dead, identity politics fuels an ugly populism on the other side, and loneliness is an epidemic because of all these things.
Actual Americans are not so gloomy. According to a nationally representative survey that my American Enterprise Institute colleagues and I have conducted, America is doing better than it thinks it is.
