The Barking Lot – America’s Finest Dog Blog (10/20/18)

The Barking Lot is a regular weekly feature of This Just In…Written by my lovely wife, Jennifer and me.  It opens with the weekend dog walking forecast followed by the main blog from dog lover, Jennifer. Then it’s DOGS IN THE NEWS and our close. Enjoy!

THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.

TODAY:  Very windy. Showers in the morning, clearing later in the day. High of 47. “F”

  Sunny. High of 49. “D”

Now, here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer, with this week’s main blog.

“Hey, Finn!  Go fetch your bobbu!  Come on, boy!  You can do it!”

“Knox…  Where’s your bobmick?  Bring me your bobmick!  Yeah, that’s the good boy!”

“Goldie!  Get your piggy!  Wanna play with your stuffed piggy?”

“Snickers!  Find your monkey!  Let’s play tug-of-war with monkey!”

Which dogs respond better to the commands above?  Finn and Knox, or Goldie and Snickers?  You might immediately think, “Of course, Goldie and Snickers.  You’re using real words, not some made-up gibberish!  Dogs are brilliant, why would they respond to crazy words they don’t know?”

Yes we know dogs are brilliant.  Why would we dedicate ten years to a dog blog if we didn’t know they are crazy-smart?  But dog brilliance and human brilliance are two different points.  And a new study shows an interesting example of that.

Humans’ brains show greater activity when we hear words we know, while it appears that dogs’ brains move in fast gear when they hears words they don’t according to 12 canine participants and their results.  AND, dogs are more responsive to scents and visual clues too.

So just when you thought your dog was as smart as you (or smarter?) you might have to reconsider the ways he’s smarter.  Well, maybe next month a different study will come out!  In the meantime, enjoy the latest findings.  Feel free to leave a comment, too!
