THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.
TODAY: Sunny. High of 80. “A”
SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. High of 81. “A”
Now, here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer, with this week’s main blog.
It’s no secret that I’ve transferred my obsession with dogs onto our lovely daughter. It might be difficult to imagine but I believe she’s even crazier about them than I am! True, she doesn’t write a weekly dog blog. Given her age and multiple commitments that’s understandable. But just last week, she was thrilled that she could adopt a new dog for her dolls! Thank you Franklin Target for providing a sweet moment that included an adoption form and photo op! (She named her new pup Knox after her cousin Kari’s recent adoption of a real puppy!)
Over the summer Kyla also took it upon herself to leave a large container of water out for our neighborhood dogs when they are out on their walks. She was initially inspired because one of the neighbor dogs, black Lab Brody, stopped at our driveway one hot afternoon looking like he could use a little refreshment. She ran inside, grabbed a bowl & filled it and quickly returned to help our friend in need.
She & Brody became fast friends but she didn’t want it to end there. So that’s where the “dogs stop here” idea was born. She posted a sign on the tree welcoming all to drink and it was an immediate hit.
In addition to Brody, a beautiful young Golden Retriever quickly became a regular customer. Last summer on my morning walks I met her as a puppy. This summer she was no longer a puppy; her obvious love of life had grown in direct proportion to her size. Every morning she would enthusiastically take her mom & dad for a walk and we would enjoy the glimpses of her from our office window. It warmed our hearts knowing we were cooling her off. But the best part was when her owners left a sweet note under Kyla’s sign, thanking us and telling us how much Leila loved stopping for water. Then she became even MORE spoiled…
One particularly hot morning Kevin thought he’d go the extra mile and placed a handful of ice cubes in the bowl. Leila was there soon after, and clearly loved the addition. She was bobbing for them, drinking furiously, and having a wonderful time. Her owner literally had to take a cube out of the bowl to lure her away and finish her walk. During that entire heat wave she was greeted with a fresh bowl of ice water every morning. Her dad summed it up when this began by telling us we would spoil her and that quickly became true. But we all loved every minute of it.
OK so are you freaking out by now, yelling at your computer and saying “Fischer family! You could have KILLED those dogs with that ice! Don’t you know you’ll bloat them???!!!”
So yes, we’ll continue to spoil our neighbor dogs.
