The Barking Lot is a regular weekly feature of This Just In…Written by my lovely wife, Jennifer and me. It opens with the weekend dog walking forecast followed by the main blog from dog lover, Jennifer. Then it’s DOGS IN THE NEWS and our close. Enjoy!
THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.
TODAY: Considerable cloudiness with occasional rain showers. High of 72. Sorry but we lean “D”
SUNDAY: Scattered thunderstorms in the morning, then partly cloudy late in the day. High of 76. “C”
Now, here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer, with this week’s main blog.
If you’ve read my blogs for any length of time, you know that I detest winter and everything involved in the season. I hate when it hurts to be outside; I hate needing four layers of clothes to be remotely comfortable; I hate when “day time” ends at 4:30; I hate ice & snow.
If I had a dog, I would add “I hate having to put my dog outside to go to the bathroom.” Notice I didn’t say, “I hate having to walk my dog twice a day in a blizzard.” When we have a dog it’s going in the back yard for exercise & toileting needs. I am not – repeat NOT – walking our future canine in any sort of inclement weather.
However, I know I’ll enjoy summer even more when we have a dog. It will get its very own kiddie pool and will for sure enjoy “pupsicles” and other frozen treats. I’ll make sure it gets plenty of water and has a nice shady area to enjoy the outdoors. And yes I’ll probably buy it some crazy gizmo like a collar with a small fan or a dog bed that can be filled with ice packs. Who knows?
Wisconsinites know how to pack a lot of fun into our too-short summers. There are trips to the lake, picnics, sporting events, BBQ’s, walks & bike rides, and of course games of catch with Fido. Running out of ideas to share the sun with your four-legged friend? Check out some suggestions in this gallery from Modern Dog Magazine. I bet there are some you didn’t think of!
I don’t want to be a Debbie Downer and take all the joy out of your summer cavorting. However, you DO need to be smart and you DO need to pay attention to some areas that could spell trouble for your pup. As much as we consider them a member of our family, dogs have special needs and don’t react the same way their human companions do. Naturally they don’t sweat and need other ways to stay cool. Beyond that tidbit that all dog owners are aware of, did you know you should NOT cut your dog’s hair in hotter months? For the reason why and to find out other safety tips, read some of these ideas from Justine Lee, DVM.
Hopefully you survived the Independence Day fireworks without too many issues. Contrary to my husband’s belief that “Summer is over after the 4th of July” I feel there’s still a lot of time to love the warm weather and share the good times with your pooch. So finish reading “Dogs In The News” and get out there with your friend!
