Today’s highly interesting read (05/22/18):The Decriminalization Delusion

A prison reform summit was held at the White House last Friday, where President Trump told the audience, “America is a nation that believes in the power of redemption.”

The  FIRST STEP Act focuses on improving prison conditions for pregnant inmates, and could provide possible early release for prisoners who earn credits for good behavior.

The House just passed the bill  but it faces tough odds in the Senate. It’s being promoted by President Trump’s adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

To the sanity rescue: The brilliant Heather Mac Donald, the Thomas W. Smith Fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a contributing editor of City Journal. Mac Donald’s newest book, The War on Cops (2016), warns that raced-based attacks on the criminal-justice system, from the White House on down, are eroding the authority of law and putting lives at risk.

From MacDonald:

America doesn’t have an incarceration problem—it has a crime problem.

BINGO!

Here’s the entire column.
