Were you out driving in the rain this morning?

If so did you have your headlights on?

I was surprised at so many motorists that did not.

On more than one occasion I’ve heard a Milwaukee radio traffic reporter proclaim “If you’re using your windshield wipers, you must turn your headlights on. It’s the law.”

Well, not exactly.

The “law” signed by Governor Walker on February 29, 2016, prohibits a person from operating a motor vehicle on a highway without its lights on when weather conditions limit visibility. No person may operate a motor vehicle upon a highway when weather conditions limit visibility such that objects on a highway are not clearly discernable at a distance of 500 feet from the front of a vehicle (a period of limited visibility) unless the motor vehicle is equipped with headlamps and tail lamps.

That’s a football field and a half roughly.

There is a fine for breaking this law.  Try $160.
