State Assembly Passes Bill Ending Abortion Coverage for State Employees
By a 61-35 vote last Thursday, the Wisconsin Assembly passed legislation to prohibit elective abortion coverage in Wisconsin’s public health insurance plans. The legislation now heads to the Wisconsin Senate. If Assembly Bill 128 becomes law, Wisconsin taxpayers would no longer pay for state employees’ abortions. Pro-Life Life Wisconsin thanks Assembly Republicans for persevering in their ongoing effort to end taxpayer funding of abortion in Wisconsin. We especially thank the bill’s authors, Reps. André Jacque, Janel Brandtjen and Ron Tusler and Senator Dave Craig.
Abortion – the direct, intentional killing of a preborn child – is not health care. In poll after poll, Americans overwhelmingly say they oppose taxpayer-funded abortion. Politico and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health conducted a poll in September 2016 showing that a majority of likely voters, 58 percent, opposed the use of Medicaid funds to pay for abortion. Similarly, a July 2016 Marist poll found that 62 percent of Americans oppose taxpayer funding of abortion.
We must fully end taxpayer funding of abortion in Wisconsin! It is bad enough that child killing is legal. At the very least, taxpayers should not be forced to fund it.
Heal Without Harm Coalition Testifies in Support of Senate Bills 423 & 424
On Thursday, November 2, the Heal Without Harm Coalition testified before the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee in support of the Heal Without Harm Legislative Initiative, legislation that would ban the trade and use of aborted baby body parts and provide ethical sources of fetal tissue by encouraging the donation of stillborn or miscarried children. The HWH Coalition is composed of member organizations, including Pro-Life Wisconsin, Wisconsin Family Action, Wisconsin Right to Life, and Wisconsin Catholic Conference, among others.
Authored by Senator Terry Moulton (R-Chippewa Falls) and Representative Joel Kleefisch (R-Oconomowoc), the Heal Without Harm Legislative Initiative (SB 423/AB 549 & SB 424/AB 550) creates ethical standards for medical research that will allow scientists, medical professionals, and families experiencing illness to explore new treatments in good conscience and without controversy. This proposal will also make certain that families who have suffered the loss of a child due to miscarriage or stillbirth are given information about their options for the final disposition of their child, and the opportunity to donate their child’s remains.
