Each week during this year’s high school football season as I have in previous years, I’m giving out a weekly POO Award to the Wisconsin high school football team that committed the most egregious act of poor sportsmanship by trying to humiliate its opponent.
My goal is to try to build awareness of the importance of sportsmanship.
POO stands for Piling On Offensively (Or if you prefer, Pouring it On Offensively)
Playoffs Level 1
Black Hawk 68, North Crawford 0
Racine Lutheran 69, Belleville 7
Greenfield 34, Milwaukee Bay View 7
That last one requires some explanation.
I was at the Bay View-Greenfield game Friday night. Greenfield took early command, scoring four touchdowns on their first four possessions and led 28-7 at halftime.
The score remained that way until Greenfield got the ball on their own 9-yard line with just under 10 minutes left in the game. The Hawks went on a grinding, methodical drive down the field that chewed up time on the clock.
With about 30 seconds left Greenfield had worked their way to Bay View’s 1-yard line. Greenfield broke their huddle and QB Omarion Bartlett lined up in the shotgun. He handed off to running back Sam Streeter who carried one yard into the end zone against a tired Bay View defense for a score with 18.4 seconds.
That made the final 34-7. The touchdown was not necessary. Greenfield’s QB should have been instructed to take a knee to let the clock run out. Thank goodness no one got hurt and a fight didn’t break out.
A team doesn’t have to score 60, 70, or 80 points to be unsportsmanlike.
Now that we’re past the first round of the playoffs the scores should be far more respectable.
Week 9 (end of regular season)
Hortonville 74, Oshkosh North 0
Racine Lutheran 70, Thomas More 0
Luck 74, Mellen 6
Lake Country Lutheran 72, Hope Christian 6
They’ve done it again.
Luck 68, New Auburn 0
Luck 86, Lincoln 14
Edgar 70, Chequamegon 0
Racine Horlick 70, Kenosha Tremper 3
Leading 62-3 in the 3rd quarter, Horlick scored yet another touchdown to make the score 68-3. Horlick did score an extra point. Instead they were successful on a 2-point conversion. That’s unnecessary piling on.
