11) The 2017 Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition,now in its 43rd year, is dedicated to showcasing the beautiful and bizarre as seen under a light microscope. It attracted over 2,000 entries from 88 countries. The 4th place winner shows the everted scolex (head) of a tapeworm magnified 200x. Photograph: Teresa Zgoda. Fifth place went to mold on a tomato magnified 3.9x.  Photograph: Dean Lerman. First place went to Dr. Bram van den Broek who reveals an exceptional and microscopic view of something we see every day — our skin. The image depicts a cell expressing an excessive amount of keratin.
