I don’t know friends, to this day, what it was that they
was a doin’ down there,
but I have studied about it.
I think it was that it’s some kindly of a contest where they
see which bunchful of them men can take that pumpkin
and run from one end of that cow pasture to the other
without gettin’ knocked down or steppin’ in somethin’.
From Andy Grifffith’s 1953 recording, “What It Was, Was Football”
Every Friday night we smooth our way into the weekend with music, the universal language. These selections demonstrate that despite what is being passed off as art today, there is plenty of really good music available. Come along and enjoy.
The NFL season officially got underway Thursday night in Foxboro as the New England Patriots took on the Kansas City Chiefs. Banners at Gillette Stadium were updated.

The Patriots were heavy favorites, but…
Kansas City 42, New England 27
Most games, including Seattle at Green Bay, will be played on Sunday.
This week, music to get you into the pro football mood.
With the exception of Kansas City and New England who’ve got one game under their belts every team starts anew on Sunday and Monday. They’re 0-0 with hopes and dreams of going all the way, of having a magical season.
In Super Bowl XIV played in 1980 the Pittsburgh Steelers took on the Los Angeles Rams. Each team had their own theme song. The Steelers modified the words to the Pennsylvania Polka.
“Offense, offense, take that football all the way up the field!”
“Offense, offense, let’s go and score and never ever yield!”
Meanwhile the Rams used one of the big hits of that time, McFadden and Whitehead’s “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now.” Here’s the remake done by the late great NBA star turned smooth jazz bassist Wayman Tisdale.
Oh, the Packers have had their own theme/fight song for a long, long time.
For the Packer game might you be watching at a party with a bunch of other football crazies?
In a classic hit from the 1960’s Ramsey Lewis did the instrumental. Dobie Gray sang on another recording:
I’m in with the in crowd, I go where the in crowd goes
I’m in with the in crowd and I know what the in crowd knows
Anytime of the year, don’t you hear? Dressing fine, making time
We breeze up and down the street, we get respect from the people we meet
They make way day or night, they know the in crowd is out of sight
I’m in with the in crowd, I know every latest dance
When you’re in with the in crowd, it’s so easy to find romance
Any time of the year, don’t you hear? If it’s square, we ain’t there
In 2004, Ramsey Lewis did a re-make of his own hit.
That’s it for this week.
Have a great weekend!
Nothing tops the the old NFL Films music by Sam Spence.
We close with a medley of classics.
