The Barking Lot – America’s Finest Dog Blog (09/02/17)

The Barking Lot is a regular weekly feature of This Just In…Written by my lovely wife, Jennifer and me.  It opens with the weekend dog walking forecast followed by the main blog from dog lover, Jennifer. Then it’s DOGS IN THE NEWS and our close. Enjoy!

THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.

TODAY:  Wake up to temps in the low 50’s. They warm to the 60’s by 10:00 a.m. Partly cloudy. Below normal, but comfortable and pleasant. High of 72. “A”

SUNDAY:  Sunny. High of 81. “A”

LABOR DAY MONDAY: Afternoon thunderstorms. High of 82. “B”

Now, here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog.

Every dog has at least one job in its life… its main responsibility is to keep its human happy.  But that’s a pretty simple task even for the least-energetic, most laid-back pup.  Most if not all dog owners will tell you that a look from those adoring eyes, a happy tail wag, an excited “yip” to greet you or even a lick is more than enough for daily doggy duty.

But there are the over-achievers out there.  The ones at the top of their obedience class.  The ones who don’t know the meaning of “let’s call it a day.”  The ones who truly go above-and-beyond the standard expectations of animal accountability.  Those would be your working dogs whether by AKC breed/group definition or just a pooch so reliable you truly don’t know what you’d do without its assistance.

This Labor Day weekend, we celebrate them as we celebrate all American workers’ contributions to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Truly, Labor Day isn’t just for two-legged laborers.  While there are certainly many forms of service, I think that military dogs and service dogs truly top the list of hard workers.  Can you think of anything more important than keeping our troops safe, and helping with mental & physical well-being for those in need?

Take a few moments to read about remarkable canines who exemplify the meaning of working dogs.  As if that wasn’t enough to show how awesome dogs are when they’re on the job, then check out this video salute from the American Kennel Club.  They’re lovingly referred to as “the Ford pickups of the canine kingdom.”

If you know any working dogs personally (your own or someone else’s) take an extra moment this weekend to recognize them as part of the labor force.  And remember what I said at the beginning of this blog:  every dog has at least one job in its life.  So go ahead and reward your pooch no matter what their occupation is.
