It’s almost laughable.
I understand that in politics, if you’re the incumbent you always takes your opponent seriously. But my goodness, when the news broke that Paul Nehlen will once again run against Paul Ryan in 2018, guffaws were obligatory.
When Nehlen ran against Ryan in the primary last August, Nehlen got his clock cleaned, his hat handed to him, his doors blown off.
Here in Franklin the numbers were even worse for Nehlen.
Representative in Congress, District 1
Paul Ryan: 3,277 90.98%
Paul Nehlen: 325 9.02%
Remember last year’s Independence Day Parade in Franklin?
Nothing wrong with Nehlen having a huge vehicle with his supporters and signage. But Nehlen apparently flunked Holiday Parade 101. You put politics aside and take the high road on the 4th of July.
Nehlen had at least one sign that spewed propaganda. And a fellow at the very back of the entourage was yelling, “Down with corporate welfare.”
Walk or ride the route. Shake hands. Pass out brochures and/or buttons. But ditch the rhetoric.
In my area Nehlen got zero cheers or hand claps. He got no reaction at all.
Odds are Nehlen will skip the 2017 parade but be there for 2018. Will there be decorum and appropriate behavior?
Not when you consider the kind of garbage the candidate himself puts up on his own social media site:
Paul Ryan celebrates Macron’s win in France, invites all his friends to the party.
