Here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog.
Over this past school year, I slipped into some eating habits that I shouldn’t have. It was gradual and unintentional but suddenly my clothes were snug and I wasn’t feeling good. The very first day of summer vacation was a new start for healthier habits.
I decided I would start my old 2-mile walk in the morning before getting Kevin & Kyla started on their days. I love the quiet “me” time, and feel good that I’m doing something positive for myself. It’s only been a week though so I haven’t noticed any major improvements.
The one thing I do notice is who is walking around me. On four legs that is, not two. Of course I’m friendly towards the owners; they are our neighbors. But it’s the furry friends they’re walking with that really make me willing to pause my walk & chat.
I’ve met a new golden retriever puppy who is all wags, licks, nibbles and jumps. I see “regulars” who now are part of my routine rather than just watching them pass by through the window. But so far the best part is reconnecting with a neighbor who I haven’t talked to in possibly three years. Her dog Cash brought us together initially because she would walk him numerous times a day in an effort to wear off his puppy energy.
Several years have passed though and Cash is no longer with us. She now is pet parent to Digger. While we were eager to meet him, she explained that Digger is a rescue and has some socialization issues. She simply didn’t trust his behavior enough to introduce us up close. I understood completely and appreciated her responsibility and conscientiousness as an owner. So we kept a comfortable distance and still enjoyed a long overdue conversation.
Every morning now when I get home, Kyla asks who I have seen. I think that is the real reason she keeps trying to accompany me on my route. I don’t think it’s the desire for an extra 30 minutes of Mommy-and-Kyla time since our summers are nothing but that. I don’t suppose it will be much longer before she suggests TWO walks a day!
Actually knowing our sweetly conniving child as I do, she will use this new routine as one more way to try to convince Daddy that we need our OWN dog. It makes perfect sense to me!
