The Barking Lot is a regular weekly feature of This Just In…Written by my lovely wife, Jennifer and me. It opens with the weekend dog walking forecast followed by the main blog from dog lover, Jennifer. Then it’s DOGS IN THE NEWS and our close. Enjoy!
THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.
TODAY: Mostly sunny. High of 67. “A”
SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. High of 75. “A”
Here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog.
Q: “Would you like to get a dog?”
A: Really? Did you just ask me that? Oh – you must be new to this blog. Otherwise you’d never ask such a ridiculous thing because you should already know the answer.
Q: “So why don’t you just adopt one?”
A: Please see above.
I like to make my wonderful, kind, loving, generous husband Kevin the scapegoat here. HE is the reason we don’t have a dog. Although a dog lover through-and-through HE will not consider a dog for HIS specific set of reasons. Yes, if it were up to ME and only ME we would have had a dog or perhaps plural a very long time ago.
However, if I am truly honest with everyone including myself then I would have to admit I’m at least partly to blame as well. (Hopefully he won’t read my portion of the blog this week and develop that “You know I’m right” attitude.)
I’m not afraid of dog hair covering our furniture. (That’s what slipcovers and vacuums are for.) I’m not afraid of daily walks. (That’s what a front yard and electric collars are for.) I’m not afraid of the end-of-life moments. (That’s because of saying goodbye to three animals in my young adulthood.)
What is my one fear? Expense. As I repeatedly have to explain to our beautiful eight year old daughter, the Money Tree has no more leaves. I spent the first five years of Kyla’s life at home with her. It was the greatest joy I could experience (minus one or two meltdowns.) We were fine going down to one income, but it was an adjustment for sure.
Now that I am working not-quite full-time, we’ve altered our family budget once again and are enjoying the cushion that my extra paycheck provides. So why on earth would we want to add another steady expense when we’re perfectly content with our current situation?
According to a senior editor at CNBC, we’d be perfectly sane if we wanted to add a dog to the mix and end up completely broke. Hmm.
