The Barking Lot is a regular weekly feature of This Just In…Written by my lovely wife, Jennifer and me. It opens with the weekend dog walking forecast followed by the main blog from dog lover, Jennifer. Then it’s DOGS IN THE NEWS and our close. Enjoy!
THE WEEKEND DOG-WALKING FORECAST: We grade the weather outlook for taking your pet outdoors.
TODAY: Sunny. High of 15. “F”
SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. High of 20. “F”
Here’s my lovely wife, Jennifer with this week’s main blog:
Yes, I admit that I LOVE articles that highlight new research findings about dogs. I love the scientific discoveries about their intelligence, their extreme sense of smell, the way they can help us possibly solve human health problems. I’ll even admit that I like some of the tech gadgets that can enrich ours and our dogs’ lives.
On the flip side I think society’s obsession with new or improving technology combined with our equal obsession with not our pets but our fur babies can and does get carried away. I’m pretty sure your four-legged family member would be just as happy with a basic rawhide that you leave for him before you go to work as he would with a robotically rationed gourmet nugget. Really, who are you doing that for and why?
Believe it or not it was just about three years ago when I wrote about gadgets, gizmos and goofiness that supposedly explained to you just what your dog was THINKING. Things haven’t changed all that much, actually.
While I admit that a GPS tracking device can certainly provide peace of mind and perhaps a faster reunion with your friend should they get lost, it seems like most of these devices play to the sensitivities of the owner and not anything their dog would understand or appreciate.
I guess that in the span of three years I still have the same opinion: I don’t need a fancy-schmancy electronic collar to tell me what my dog wants or needs.
Time now for DOGS IN THE NEWS, canines that made headlines the past week, and we’ve got a bunch, so let’s go.
