Friday Night Forgotten Oldie: Rudolph song didn’t always fit in

Last week CBS, God love ’em broadcast the Christmas classic, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” in all its claymation splendor.

You know the story. A humiliated Rudolph meets up with dentist-wanna be Hermey who doesn’t stack up as elf material. The two sing about their misfortune.

We’re a couple of misfits

That’s where we fit in!

We’re not daffy and dilly
Don’t go ’round willy nilly
Seems to us kinda silly
That we don’t fit in

“We’re a Couple of Misfits” was part of the original Rudolph special in 1964, only to be replaced by the following shorter song in 1965 so additional scenes could be included.

 

“Fame and Fortune” remained in the special through 1998. That’s when “We’re a Couple of Misfits” returned and has continued ever since.
